CRCQL launches last-ditch effort to dissuade Philly from signing new Reworld contract
Chester Residents Concerned for Quality Living (CRCQL) is asking Delaware County residents to call or email Philadelphia City Council to NOT approve a new contract with Reworld/Covanta incinerator to burn a portion of its trash and to pass the “Stop Trashing Our Air Act.” City Council previously failed to enact the bill to stop doing business with Reworld.
The organization plans a press conference at 8:45 a.m. on Sept. 17 outside Philadelphia City Hall when Philadelphia City Council resumes. Please RSVP here if you are interested in attending/need transportation.
According to CRCQL, the Department of Sanitation is considering a possible seven-year renewed contract with Reworld, the largest trash incinerator in the U.S and one of the biggest polluters in the Philadelphia region. This incinerator is a decades-long chronic violator that has been polluting the region for over 30 years and contributes to the high cancer and asthma rates in Chester and Philadelphia, CRCQL says.
The group provided the following talking points to make when calling or emailing:
- Philadelphia burns their trash in the City of Chester, contributing to pollution and devastating health-related issues for the city and region.
- Philly is ranked No. 4 in the nation for asthma and was rated an “F” for air quality by the American Lung Association.
- Burning Philadelphia’s trash is making Chester, Philadelphia, and other communities around our region sick with air pollution.
- Vote to permanently ban the practice of trash incineration with Philly’s solid waste.
- Philly City Council must vote against a new contract with Reworld!
- Since Reworld began operating this incinerator in 2005, they have received about 400 violations and nearly $1 million in fines. Does Philadelphia really want to do business with a company that breaks the law, makes us sick and pollutes our air?
