Brookhaven Boro passes resolution to ban LNG terminals anywhere in Delco
The Brookhaven Borough Council Monday night unanimously passed a resolution declaring its opposition to the construction of an LNG export terminal anywhere along the Delaware River waterfront in Delaware County.
The borough’s two-year-old Sustainability Committee recommended the resolution, concluding that given its proximity to Chester and Eddystone Borough, the latest target location, the borough would be affected by its construction’
“There are many negative public health, safety and environmental risks associated with such facilities,” the Sustainability Committee said.
Environmentalists have pointed to increased air pollution, increased cancer rates, increased train and truck traffic trucking in LNG and the possibility of a major explosion. The buffer area that would be required by a terminal would require the purchase and demolition of possibly hundreds of homes, depending on its proposed location.
While there were Sierra Club and Delaware Riverkeeper Network representatives in the audience, they were not allowed to speak because they were not Brookhaven residents.
Jodine Mayberry, the editor of the Delaware County Environmental Clearinghouse and a Brookhaven resident, was the only one to offer a public comment.
She thanked the borough in advance for passing the resolution and she said that the riverfront communities are too populous to make it safe to build and operate an LNG terminal anywhere along the river in the county.
There is one terminal in Marcus Hook at the Energy Transport Services facilities for exporting natural gas byproducts to make plastic goods.
Riverkeepers said they are asking municipalities throughout Delaware County to pass similar resolutions. Upper Providence, Rose Valley, Nether Providence and Lansdowne have also passed the resolutions.
The resolution passed unanimously with no council discussion.
