Clean Air Council to make final report on 3-year Chester corridor air monitoring project

The Clean Air Council will hold a virtual community meeting to share the data and results of its three-year air monitoring program along the Chester-Marcus hook industrial corridor. The meeting is Wednesday Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m.

CAC received a federal grant to install air monitors along the corridor to collect information on the pollutants being emitted by various industrial sites along the Delaware River to assess the health effects on the population.

That followed research conducted by Johns Hopkins University using a mobile van in 2022-2023 that found that adverse physical symptoms, such as congestion, headaches and cough, were common and interfered with daily life.

Asthma rates were higher among children living in southern Delaware County and independent studies of cancer rates found that the rates for many types of cancers are higher along the corridor than in the rest of Delaware county or statewide.

The monitors are expected to provide more definitive information about the types of pollutants and their concentrations that are emitted from industrial sites. The Clean Air Council air monitoring study is separate from another three-year monitoring project being conducted by the Pennsylvania department of Environmental Protection that is primarily gathering data in the same general area on particulate matter from the sites.

The Clean Air Council will report on what we learned from the monitors, what happens next and how the community can stay engaged and connected. To register for the meeting, go to the Clearinghouse event page or register HERE.
