Years After Fracking Report, Public Health Goals Largely Unmet

Five years after a grand jury report on the environmental harms caused by fracking, progress on its recommendations has been minimal, according to five environmental nonprofits.

Observing the anniversary of the report on Wednesday, the groups — Earthworks, the Sierra Club, Protect PT, the Center for Coalfield Justice, and the Environmental Health Project — called on Gov. Josh Shapiro and the state legislature to fully implement those recommendations.

According to reporting by Inside Climate News, Gov. Shapiro — who was Attorney General at the time and convened the grand jury — has failed to follow through on specific recommendations for reducing risks to the public. Of the eight goals set by the report, essentially no progress has been made on five, with limited success in the remaining areas.

A spokesman for the Governor’s office blamed the lack of progress on the divided legislature, with Republicans controlling the Senate while Democrats narrowly control the House.
