Organization of the Month: Radnor EAC focuses on native plants, bees and butterflies

The Radnor Township Environmental Council is focusing this year on promoting native plants and encouraging residents to plant milkweed to nurture monarch butterflies, a very endangered species, as well as on various energy projects.
The EAC has been busy in 2026! Building on the experience of prior years, our 7 member Council of community volunteers has encouraged residents to use sustainable landscaping.
The EAC has facilitated this by supporting the native perennial plant seed bank housed at the Radnor Memorial Library. We hold a popular Annual Native Plant Giveaway (all native perennials!), and coordinate student and community volunteers in the planting of native perennial beds on municipal and public school property.
This year we encouraged residents to consider creating intentional milkweed habitats for Monarch butterflies to increase their declining population. Our residents can highlight their pollinator-friendly yards with a banner through our Eco-Friendly Yard Award program.
The EAC routinely reports on upgrades the township has made in energy efficiency upgrades in building HVAC and lighting systems, installation of rooftop solar panels and LED streetlights.
Many municipal vehicles including police cars are now electric and charging stations have been installed. Work is ongoing in developing and evaluating the usefulness of a system to benchmark building energy efficiency.
Finally, we sponsor public talks on a variety of topics related to the environment. From ways to cut down on household waste, to the importance of bees, to expert information on planning and planting native perennial plantings, and much more, we are educating our residents in strategies to improve our environment.
