Newlin Grist Mill plans 250th Celebration highlighting early trades and foods
Newlin Grist Mill in Glen Mills invites the public to its 250th celebration, with three packed days of historical fun this spring. Those attending can enjoy a selection of demonstrations, workshops, make-and-take activities, and talks on topics related to the trades that built America and fueled a revolution.
On April 18, an archaeology program, a historical building and roofing demonstration, and a cooking demonstration on Liberty Teas will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
On May 16, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., guests can enjoy archaeology, a historic brewing demonstration by Succession Fermentory, a make-and-take textile demonstration by Eva Mergen, and a ticketed Newlin Speaker Series lecture in the evening.
The celebrations will come to a close, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 6, with a soldier-ration cooking demonstration by Stacy Booth, a woodworking demonstration by For Woodness Sake, and two special ticketed programs in the afternoon and evening.
Food and drink will be available for purchase at all events by The Munch Box and coffee by Middle Brother Coffee.
Demonstrations are ongoing and free to attend.
Special ticketed programs include Beyond Homespun: Commerce, Culture, and Colonial Cloth by Eva Mergen on May 16; In Support of the Army: How Women Supported the Continental Army on June 6; and Whittling Workshop on June 6, where attendees will turn a simple piece of wood into a work of art.
Founded in 1960, the purpose of the Nicholas Newlin Foundation is to preserve the land at the grist mill and historic buildings for the pleasure and education of the public.
In an area of urban growth, the foundation maintains open land as a refuge for plants, animals and birds, and for the people who come to enjoy them. In an era of digital technology, it offers visitors insights into the vanished life of the rural 18th century.
