Earth Day is April 22. The first Earth Day in 1970 marked the beginning of the environmental movement. U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson founded it as a national day to raise awareness of environmental issues and a cadre of activists organized teach-ins held at gatherings throughout the United States. The following year, Congress created the Environmental Protection Agency and launched the “Superfund” to force corporations to clean up the environmental disaster sites they had created.
