SUMMARY:January Action Hour: Making Polluters Pay
DESCRIPTION:Fossil fuel companies knowingly caused climate change\, predicting decades ago and with stunning accuracy that their products would\, in their own words\, have “catastrophic” climate effects that would do “great irreversible harm.”2 Since then\, we’ve seen disasters increase in frequency and severity\, with fossil fueled fires in LA\, floods in Texas\, hurricanes like Helene devastating the Southeast\, and more. \nJust like we aren’t allowed to litter and companies are required to clean up toxic waste sites\, Big Oil and Gas must be held accountable for its climate mess. And we’ve already seen massive victories due to grassroots advocacy. Vermont and New York passed Climate Superfund laws\, and at least a dozen more states are exploring ways to shift the cost of climate damages back where it belongs — onto the corporations that knowingly caused the harm. \nEvery dollar collected from polluters is a dollar not taken from taxpayers. These funds can build flood protections\, fire-prevention systems\, cooling centers\, resilient hospitals\, energy-efficient classrooms\, and more\, creating thousands of good-paying jobs. \nEven if you can’t attend live\, please RSVP anyway — we’ll follow up with the recording and more ways to take action.

SUMMARY:Stream Watch: Insect Identification Workshop (Donations Encouraged)
DESCRIPTION:We welcome volunteers who wish to learn the stream side and the laboratory techniques! \nThe DCVA Stream Watch is a yearly study of water quality in the Darby Creek watershed. While it is possible to measure water quality and water pollution\, the animals in the creeks have much to tell us about water quality – they spend their entire lives in the creek. Each year in early spring our Stream Watch program collects macroinvertebrates (animals without backbones that are macro\, i.e. large enough to see with the naked eye) at a variety of locations throughout the watershed. These organisms can be pollution tolerant\, pollution sensitive\, or facultative – meaning they can live in healthy or in impaired (polluted) environments. The insects and bugs we collected provide a snapshot of the health of Darby Creek and we can identify the level of water quality for that section of the creek by identifying and counting the number of bugs collected at each site.\n  \nWhile it would be great if you could be there the entire day\, it is a Saturday and there are things to do!  So\, anytime you can make it is great. A light lunch will be provided\, so please let us know if you will be there for lunch so we can place an accurate order for food. \nThis event is free; donations are very appreciated to support the work we do\, but not are required. \nClick here to Register!

SUMMARY:Multipurpose Natives: Creating Habitat through Cut Flower Gardening ($ pay what you wish)
DESCRIPTION:A joint program of Brandywine Conservancy’s Native Plant Series and Stewardship Series \nGrow beauty with purpose. Join Jennie Love\, owner of Love ‘n Fresh Flowers as she reviews the tenants of regenerative growing practices for thoughtful land stewardship as well as the value of incorporating natives in the gardening landscape. Explore a curated list of native plants ideal for cutting\, hear tips for growing them\, and learn about the ecological benefits they provide. The program wraps with time for your questions. \nAbout the presenter \nJennie started Love ‘n Fresh Flowers\, a regenerative flower farm located in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania in 2009. This vibrant five-acre flower farm is dedicated to stewarding a healthy ecosystem for creatures of all shapes and sizes. They focus on growing cut flowers and foliage\, specializing in native and perennial crops. Since then\, her work has been featured in the New York Times\, Martha Stewart Weddings\, Country Gardens\, The Philadelphia Inquirer\, and elsewhere. Read more about Jennie and her farm. \nThis event is open to the public and may be recorded. It is a “pay what you wish” program with proceeds covering presenter fees and supporting Brandywine Conservancy’s education and stewardship initiatives. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. Thank you for considering a donation. \nThe annual Native Plant Series offers a varied focus on native plants throughout the seasons for gardeners of all levels and learning styles. The 2026 “Misunderstood Natives” theme aims to explore diverse perceptions of native plants\, inviting audiences to see them through a new lens—one that offers fresh insights and practical tools for understanding the value native species bring to people\, wildlife\, and the places we live. \nThe Stewardship Series hosts educational programs on land management challenges\, and other topics of interest to easement landowners. Topics may include ecosystem restoration\, invasive species management\, incorporating best management practices (BMPs)\, farm management\, programs to assist landowners\, such as the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP). \nAll are welcome to attend. \nDue to technical difficulties beyond our control\, you may not immediately receive a confirmation email after registering\, but you will receive the Zoom login information in the reminder email that will be sent the morning of the program. If you wish to double check your registration\, please email Julia Steiner at jsteiner@brandywine.org. Approximately two weeks after the program\, all registrants will receive a link to the recording to watch at their leisure.
