SUMMARY:Emerging Water Issues in PA – Managing Pollutant Threats
DESCRIPTION:Water is the source of all life. But in recent years\, awareness of novel pollutants like microplastics and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) or “forever chemicals” has raised new questions about how we can safely manage this critical resource and reduce the threats to human health and ecological integrity. As we celebrate World Water Day\, come learn about these emerging issues and Pennsylvania’s waters. \n\nDr. Sherri A. “Sam” Mason\, Director\, Project NePTWNE\, Gannon University\nDr. Heather Preisendanz\, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Agricultural\, Food\, and Environmental Science\, Penn State University\n\nSign Up!

SUMMARY:The Economics of Data Center & Fossil Fuel Tax Incentives: Who Really Benefits?
DESCRIPTION:Nathan Jensen is a Professor in the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on economic development policy\, tax incentives and business-government relations. He is the co-author of Incentives to Pander\, which examines why governments often overuse subsidies and tax incentives when competing for corporate investment. \nIn this webinar\, Nathan will break down the economics and politics behind data center tax incentives\, explain why local governments frequently offer such large subsidies\, and explore whether communities actually see the promised economic benefits. Drawing on research and real-world examples – including recent data center deals – he will help you understand how incentive packages work\, why transparency matters\, and what you can do to demand accountability. \n→ Register here in HHN

SUMMARY:Free Native Plant and Stormwater Management Workshop (Media\, PA)
DESCRIPTION:PRC is presenting a free Native Plant and Stormwater Management workshop for residents of the Upstream Chester\, Ridley and Crum Creek Watersheds. \nLearn how simple changes to your yard can help protect local streams and reduce stormwater runoff. This free workshop will introduce the basics of stormwater management\, green infrastructure\, and non-point source pollution\, and highlight practical steps homeowners can take to better manage rainwater on their properties. We’ll also discuss the benefits of native plants and how they can help absorb runoff\, support wildlife\, and improve water quality. Participants will receive native plants to help get started at home (while supplies last). \nResidents of the upstream areas of the Chester\, Ridley\, and Crum Creek watersheds will also be eligible to sign up for a free Stream Smart House Call following the workshop. Stream Smart House Calls are free\, grant-funded educational property visits. During a House Call\, trained PRC staff will walk through your property with you\, answer questions\, and identify opportunities to better manage stormwater through practices such as rain gardens\, downspout redirects\, rain barrels\, or native plantings. Participants receive a short follow-up summary with suggestions. \nThis workshop is free\, but registration is required. \n\n“Funding for this project was awarded through the “Protect Your Drinking Water” grant program\, administered by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council with funding from Aqua\, an Essential Utilities company.”

SUMMARY:International Plastic Pellet Count Day - Volunteers Needed!
DESCRIPTION:Most plastic is made from plastic pellets — tiny beads of plastic that can spill into the environment and pollute our waterways. \nAn estimated 10 trillion plastic pellets enter the ocean every year. Wildlife can mistake plastic pellets for food and eat them.1 \nEnvironment America Research & Policy Center is helping organize the second-annual International Plastic Pellet Count on Saturday\, May 2 to search for plastic pellet pollution in our environment. Will you volunteer for the International Plastic Pellet Count on May 2 in your community? \nWe’re looking for volunteers across America to complete their own plastic pellet counts and clean-up events. All you need to do to join the International Plastic Pellet Count is visit your local waterway\, look for plastic pellet pollution\, and record what you find. \nYour plastic pellet count can take as little as 10 minutes. Spending a few minutes helping find and count plastic pellets at your local stream\, river\, lake\, wetland or ocean beach is a great way to take personal action to help put wildlife over waste. And it’s even more fun if you invite your friends and family to join you. \nSign up for the International Plastic Pellet Count on Saturday\, May 2.
