On Monday 11/17, we have a very important CALL TO ACTION! There will be a public hearing on the Stop Trashing Our Air Act at Philly City Hall (Room 400) scheduled for 1pm. This bill introduced by Councilmember Jamie Gauthier in September would ban Philly from incinerating their waste. It is very timely as the city’s contract with the incinerator in Chester is up for renewal in 2026. We encourage residents and allies to attend this hearing in support of this bill – we want to fill the room! Flyer with information is below. If you plan to attend in-person, you will need to bring photo ID to enter the building.
CRCQL is providing a shuttle to the hearing for anyone who would like to attend! The shuttle will leave at 12:15pm from ACCESS Center (701 Booth St. Chester) and return at 5pm. Please RSVP for your spot on the bus HERE or text 484-402-7530.
37% of Philadelphia’s trash is burned in Chester, and makes up nearly 1/3rd of the total waste burned at the Reworld/Covanta incinerator. The facility is the nation’s largest trash incinerator, burning up to 3,500 tons of trash and industrial waste daily, and the region’s top industrial air polluter. It is wreaking havoc on the health on residents in Chester City and the region with increased asthma, cancer and other health-related issues from the pollution. The odor, truck traffic and noise is also impacting residents quality of life, property values and hindering the economic revitalization of the city.
